Top-grain leather is meant to be used. It darkens and softens with wear rather than cracking, and the first few marks are the ones that become patina. Do not be too careful with it.
Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. Do not soak it, and do not put it near a radiator to dry – let it dry at room temperature and away from direct heat.
A leather balm once or twice a year keeps it supple. Test on the base first, where nobody looks.
The lining wipes clean. Bottles, spills and worse are what it is there for.
